A Commonwealth period West Country silver Puritan Spoon, Exeter town mark only in bowl, circa 1650, the reverse of handle terminal prick dot engraved 'AW' and dated 1704, the stem later engraved 'Breadalbane', 7in (17.8cm) long, 1.4ozt.

The 1st Marquess of Breadalbane (1851-1922) was a pioneering collector of silver and early spoons in particular, he marked pieces in his collection with his name. See also Ellis sale, Sotheby's 1935 Lot 177. 
Provenance: from The Charles C Brian Collection.  Mr Charles Brian was a born in Plymouth in 1916; he trained as a solicitor and joined his family law practice, C G Brian & Sons. He had a great love of Plymouth and Devon, and amassed a collection of Exeter and Plymouth silver. His particular interest was his collection of early West Country spoons.
